If you ask any Michigan wedding planner about mid-September weather, they’ll tell you to prepare for absolutely anything—from crisp autumn breezes to unexpected summer warmth. For Allison and Riley’s special day at Fernwood Botanical Garden, nature gave us a full-blown mid-September heatwave topping 90 degrees under glowing, brilliant sunshine. It was warm, vibrant, and utterly gorgeous in the gardens.
As a wedding planner, there is a special place in my heart for intimate weddings. Smaller celebrations carry a unique, heartfelt energy where every guest feels personally woven into the couple’s story. Allison and Riley’s day was the epitome of why intimate weddings are so extraordinary: pure joy, relaxed elegance, and endless memorable moments surrounded by the people who matter most.
An Adventurous First Look
Before the ceremony, Allison and Riley shared a private First Look tucked away in the lush greenery of Fernwood. The journey to their meeting spot took them along an adventurous garden path leading to a charming wooden bridge. It provided the perfect secluded moment for the couple to pause, breathe each other in, and savor the excitement before walking down the aisle.
A special shoutout must go to the Man of Honor, who executed his duties with utmost dedication—flawlessly holding and carrying Allison’s train along the winding outdoor pathway!

A Heartfelt Garden Ceremony
The outdoor ceremony took place under an aged wooden arch, nestled against the serene backdrop of Fernwood’s lush garden foliage and a soft-trickling bird bath fountain. Surrounded by their closest family and friends, the couple stood together as Allison’s brother officiated the ceremony. Having a family member lead the vows brought such a warm, personal atmosphere to the service—simple, meaningful, and absolutely stunning.

Literary Reception Views & Stamped Floral Details
When I walked into the reception space for the very first time, my jaw literally hit the floor! The room was framed by towering, beautiful bookcases filled to the brim with books—creating the most captivating, cozy backdrop.
The tables were dressed in crisp linens and styled with understated, sophisticated decor: delicate white and green floral arrangements, twinkling votives, custom table numbers, and unique candlestick holders featuring intricate stamped floral details. The aesthetic was clean, pretty, and effortlessly elegant. Allison and Riley sat together at their sweet sweetheart table, directly facing all their favorite people in one room.

Behind the Scenes: A 60-Day Vendor Miracle
Planning a wedding always comes with behind-the-scenes magic, but every now and then, it calls for true crisis management! With less than 60 days to go before the wedding, we hit a major hurdle when the couple’s original caterer unexpectedly went completely silent. We immediately launched into action, searching high and low for a catering team that could deliver exceptional quality on short notice.
Enter SugarEllas! They stepped up when we needed it most, serving an absolutely delicious plated dinner with impeccable service. We truly couldn’t have asked for a better partner to save the day!
Live Music, Celebration & A Casino Finale
A live band filled the air with incredible music throughout the evening, creating an atmosphere that felt both elevated and deeply personal. Even with a smaller guest count, the reception hit every meaningful tradition—heartfelt toasts, emotional speeches, touching first dances, and a vibrant dance floor filled with laughing friends and family.
Because we completed so many portraits prior to the ceremony, Allison and Riley even got to enjoy one of the best perks of an intimate timeline: immediately joining their guests for cocktail hour, sipping drinks, and mingling with family and friends without feeling rushed.
And to top off an already perfect day? Once the reception concluded, Allison, Riley, and their crew headed off to the casino to keep the celebration rolling late into the night. After all… when you’ve just married the love of your life, why not double down on the fun?
